There are almost 300,000 people employed in the $14 billion spa
industry, yet it lacks any true systematic approach to core competencies
and career development. In fact, a recent survey revealed that fifty
percent of therapists quit the industry within five years of completing
their training. Cortiva Institute was created to address those
issues and deliver training, education and career development to massage
therapists and others involved in the industry, and as such has become a
new force in massage therapy and holistic care.
Mary Hughes, editor of Spa Life magazine, said spas are always
inventing new treatments in an attempt to be unique. "The industry
is very, very competitive. Even the smallest of properties, such as bed
and breakfasts, are opening spas or partnering out." Some of the newer
treatments include Thai therapies and flavoured pedicures built around
themes.
The so-called "Spa Bandit" is now feeling the heat in another
way. A 56-year-old suspect was charged with theft of services after
being accused of failing to pay for pedicures and other spa treatments,
police said Monday.
The Eco-Spa Council emphasizes the dramatic impact spa operations
can have on the environment. This impact can be positive when steps are
taken to ensure that environmentally friendly decisions are being made
by spa management. Eco-Spa Council has been formed with the mission of
raising consumer and management awareness of environmental factors in
spa operations. The council further will compile, monitor and publish a
directory for ecologically sensitive spa operators with a ranking system
that rewards those who make extra-ordinary efforts at conservation.
BIOTONE is adding another continuing education workshop to its already
successful Spa Body Treatments Workshop series. The new Clinical
Sports Massage Techniques Workshop teaches massage therapists the
most effective massage techniques for treating sports related injuries
and increasing athletic performance. The two-day workshop sessions will
be held at massage therapy schools across the nation.
BIOTONE Professional Massage & Spa Therapy Products and the Commission
on Massage Therapy Accreditation (COMTA) today announced their
partnership in a new Edu-Scholarship Fund. The program will
provide BIOTONE-funded scholarships once a year to selected COMTA
accredited schools. The scholarships then will be awarded to promising
massage students who have achieved educational excellence at the mid
point in their training. |

When you think of relaxation, chances are dental drills and Novocain
needles don't come to mind. So it seems odd to see "dental spa"
written across the clear glass doors of a dentist's office in Chicago's
tony Water Tower building, and to hear soothing classical music as you
lie on a cushy massaging reclining chair while the hygienist readies her
tooth scraper. |

The Sun Treatment Center, distributed by Sunscreen Mist of
Newport Beach, CA, has taken its extensive expertise in spray-on tanning
technology and developed a spray sunscreen vending booth to be
placed in any area with a high concentration of sunbathers (pools,
beachs, marinas, waterparks, and apartment communities). The booth
requires NO attendant and NO plumbing, provides a hygienic rinse before
every use, uses only Allevea, Spa Collection, Natural Suncare products,
has slip- resistant flooring, and offers insurance, lease and finance
options. Sunscreen Mist has seen strong initial demand for the Sun
Treatment Center booth among water parks, hotels, spas, and multi-family
properties with pools. |
