A Man's Manicure and Massage. Some curious names are cropping up on the schedules at spas across the country. In between the Amys, Karlas and Debbies is a growing list of gentlemen on the calendar, as guys increasingly claim their own share of the spa scene. And while they might cringe at the notion of pink toenail polish or a fruit-scented body treatment, men are embracing this traditionally female domain, boosting business for the spa industry and unwinding along the way. "To have my pedicure done was like nothing I'd ever felt before," said 45-year-old Vito Schimdt. "And was something I would do again." The New York-based homebuilder did more than get his toes cleaned up - he participated in a weekendlong makeover at a hotel in New York, including etiquette classes, a wardrobe consultation and cooking class, as the hotel and spa industry looks for new ways to cater to its male clientele. How To Start Your Medical Spa With The Help Of Other Physicians. Everywhere, physicians are contemplating or engaged in expanding into the "medical spa" market. Seduced by the industry buzz around this hot new phenomenon, many doctors see the medical spa as a means to boost their income and eliminate the grind and countless headaches of their daily practice. They read about growth statistics, see dazzling new equipment at trade shows, watch competitors popping up, and fear that they may be falling behind the times. With pen in hand they're ready to sign lease agreements, loan documents and lots of checks in order to catch up with a crowd of savvy entrepreneurs who know where the real action is. And the truth is that they may be right. Medical spas are the natural evolution of cosmetic medicine, and those who don't join the revolution will watch from the sidelines as their fate is decided. Guilty Pleasures: Bliss is only a manicure away. To follow your bliss, as the late Joseph Campbell instructed us, is a noble goal -- yet it's still nice when Bliss arrives all on its own. Or, in this case, Bliss Spa -- the hip New York pampering emporium that's as cheeky as it is chic. San Francisco's Bliss Spa opens its trademark blue doors Monday, transforming the fourth floor of the W Hotel into 5,000 square feet of "tension-fighting facilities." The South of Market spa, the first on the West Coast, will offer the same signature treatments made famous at the other locations.

But before the public pads into the posh environs, a handful of San Francisco teachers got a special private preview last week while receiving free treatments and products as part of the company's way to build goodwill in the community. Bliss staffers flew out from New York last month, met with representatives from Mayor Gavin Newsom's office and asked if he would recommend "people who deserve bliss but may not be able to afford it," said Kerry O'Day, one of the company "publissists" at the meeting. Unconventional Music Collaboration Changes the Day Spa Industry

Music For Synchronized Swimming In Space

Spa music has been stuck in a time when ocean waves and singing whales defined relaxation. The 80's are over and Miss Celie's Spa Orleans of New Orleans has partnered with Hi-Fi Sky to produce something entirely original -- "Music For Synchronized Swimming In Space."

Hi-Fi Sky was formed in 2004 by Tim Sommer and Alexandra Scott in the flat, flaking, slanting, shambolic city of New Orleans to make quiet music to be played very loudly, or loud music to be played very quietly. In conjunction with the release of their debut album, they'll be playing extensively around their hometown (see itinerary below). Their debut album Music For Synchronized Swimming In Space is 67 minutes of grand, ghostly, spacious, melodic sound and was released by Seersucker Fantasy Records April 20. It is music that could only be created in New Orleans from melodies that are rooted in the city's 200 year-old French and Cajun culture.

"No more whales mating and waves crashing. The same music has been used at spas since I was in high school. We know our clients want to hear something different," said Keith West-Harrison, co- owner of Spa Orleans, "and with this completely novel collection of music, they can."
