In Brief
Various Sources

May 26, 2005: The Incredible Story of the Banyan Tree Group. The Times calls him the 'Branson of the East', but the title doesn't fit. True, there are some commonalities. Ho Kwon Ping (better known as KP Ho) is as expert a marketer as the high-flying founder of the airline-to-music Virgin group. Both the Chinese Singaporean and the Englishman can teach experts a trick or two about global branding. Both are pioneers when it comes to redefining old businesses. While Richard Branson recreated the romance of flying, KP Ho put romance back into luxury holidays. But the similarities end there.

June 2, 2005: ASSEMBLY BILL AIMS TO PROTECT CONSUMERS FROM PEDICURE- RELATED INFECTIONS. Speaker Pro Tem Leland Yee, D-San Francisco, has introduced a bill that would set minimum health standards for all nail salons in California in the wake of a rise in the number of pedicure-related infections.

June 3, 2005: Scottsdale Hyatt resort to open $9 mil luxury spa in July. America has become a spa nation, and nowhere is that more evident than in the Valley's luxury resort industry. In recent years, resorts without spas or with outdated ones have added or upgraded them to compete with the new luxury hotels that feature state-of-the-art facilities. Most of them also have tacked "and Spa" onto their names. The latest to join the fraternity is the Hyatt Regency Scottsdale Resort and Spa at Gainey Ranch, long one of the Valley's most popular resorts. But it has only a few massage and treatment rooms in the hotel and sends many guests to a health club across the street. That will change early next month when the Hyatt introduces its new $9 million, 21,000-square- foot Spa Avania in a free-standing building on the resort's grounds.

June 4, 2005: Raleigh Plastic Surgery Center and Medical Spa Wins National Award. Kile Law, owner of Blue Water Spa, a Plastic Surgery Medical Spa Recently Won the 2004 ABBIE Award for best editorial feature in an industry publication. Kile owns Blue Water Spa with her husband, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Michael Law. Her series of articles, "Starting from Scratch" appeared in four consecutive issues of Skin Inc Magazine, a national skin care and spa publication. The articles documented the amazing success of Michael Law MD, Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and Blue Water Spa during their first two years in Raleigh, North Carolina.

June 7, 2005: New Products and Procedures Tout Softening and Anti-Aging Powers. The face gets more than its share of attention. Creams and lotions are specially made to moisturize it, protect it from the sun and erase its wrinkles. Cosmetic surgery techniques are designed to keep it looking youthful for a lifetime. But what about your hands? They get noticed eventually, when they rise to shake another's hand, to wave or gesture, to give or receive. And then they, too, can make an indelible impression. And so it is not surprising that hands have become a new battleground in the great cosmetic war against aging.

June 11, 2005: Public gets first glimpse of Bath Spa Project. There are plans to offer tours to other Bath residents The first public tours of the troubled Bath Spa project have been held. Up to 70 people who contributed financially to the project were given their first glimpse inside the city centre building on Saturday.

June 11, 2005: Asana Spa by Body Bistro Introduces The Tapioca Infused Foot Ritual. Feet have never been treated so well! This month, ASANA SPA®, a professional division within Body Bistro® that works with spas and salons globally to develop unique and holistic customized Ayurvedic treatments for the face and body, introduces the Tapioca Infused Foot Ritual, a 30-minute professional foot treatment that blends ancient Ayurvedic massage techniques with Tapioca and other delectable culinary ingredients to detoxify, smooth, soften and refresh the feet.

June 12, 2005: The Spa: Petal Power. They are beautiful. They are symbols of love. And their fragrance is a pleasure to the olfactory senses. However, along with all these qualities, flowers are also healers in their own right. Indian flower remedy is another form of alternative healing that can combat many ailments. You name any problem and it seems that flower remedy has an answer, says Dr Rupa Shah, who, along with her husband, Dr Atul Shah, has been practising flower remedy since the last 18 years.

Unconventional Music Collaboration Changes the Day Spa Industry
Music For Synchronized Swimming In Space

Spa music has been stuck in a time when ocean waves and singing whales defined relaxation. The 80's are over and Miss Celie's Spa Orleans of New Orleans has partnered with Hi-Fi Sky to produce something entirely original -- "Music For Synchronized Swimming In Space."

Hi-Fi Sky was formed in 2004 by Tim Sommer and Alexandra Scott in the flat, flaking, slanting, shambolic city of New Orleans to make quiet music to be played very loudly, or loud music to be played very quietly. In conjunction with the release of their debut album, they'll be playing extensively around their hometown (see itinerary below). Their debut album Music For Synchronized Swimming In Space is 67 minutes of grand, ghostly, spacious, melodic sound and was released by Seersucker Fantasy Records April 20. It is music that could only be created in New Orleans from melodies that are rooted in the city's 200 year-old French and Cajun culture.

"No more whales mating and waves crashing. The same music has been used at spas since I was in high school. We know our clients want to hear something different," said Keith West-Harrison, co-owner of Spa Orleans, "and with this completely novel collection of music, they can."

    Developing Signature Spa Services
    By Frank Guengerich

When you are in the development stage of a fitness center spa, it is important to pay particularly close attention to your concept. The spa concept is what is unique about your business, and identifiable by your customers -- service ethic, environment, treatments and spa services.

Your spa will most likely be competing against other fitness center spas or local day spas. To set your spa apart, develop a concept and approach that will be appealing, and keep your customers loyal to your business. At resort and destination spas, it is common for the spa to take on a unique quality. A spa that is located at the beach may develop a spa concept that is marine-based, and that incorporates elements from the sea. A spa that is closely affiliated with a community or business may take on attributes that are consistent with that community or business. These attributes extend to design, interior furnishings, art, staff uniforms, marketing approach and the spa menu, to name a few.
