Pat Landers'
bubble is not about to burst. As co- owner of Melbourne, Fla.-based
Classic Concepts, which produces custom spa lotions, oils and body gels,
it's been a growing endeavor. She recently had to construct another
building to handle all the growth her company has undergone in the last
few years. "People are becoming more educated about taking care of
their bodies," Landers said. "We create customized lotions,
washes and massage oils that are made to order. It's a growing
business. More and more people want to care of themselves." The
spa-accessory business is valued at a little more than $11 billion a
year, according to International Spa Association.

Despite
overwhelming bipartisan support in both houses of the State Legislature
(74-3 in the Assembly, 24-12 in the Senate), Governor Arnold
Schwarzenegger (R-Los Angeles) vetoed a bill that would have
established minimum safety standards for pedicure manicure equipment
and ensure that such businesses have procedures for the proper,
safe, and sanitary operation of spa equipment.

Gov. Arnold
Schwarzenegger signed a bill Saturday that will require cosmetics
manufacturers to disclose which of their products contain chemicals
linked to cancer, reproductive harm or developmental toxicity - a
first-ever accounting of companies using potentially damaging
ingredients, and a first-line protection for consumers. The newly
passed bill, the California Safe Cosmetics Act of 2005 (SB 484),
was vigorously opposed by an industry accustomed to free rein when it
comes to ingredient safety.

SpaBoom
Ignites Online Gift Certificate Sales for Spas
New software
program automates gift certificate sales
Albuquerque-based software developer SpaBoom has officially
launched its online gift certificate software in the spa industry. Now
spa clients can order spa gift certificates online then email or print
them right then, providing instant gratification to spa clients and
simplifying gift certificate fulfillment for spas. SpaBoom makes
it easy for spa clients to buy online gift certificates.
SpaBoom’s
instant gift certificate functionality drops right into a spa’s
existing website, with minimal effort on the part of the spa.
Feedback
from spas has been overwhelmingly positive. Lori Costa with Cascade
Gardens Spa comments, “We sold an instant online gift certificate
within an hour of going live with SpaBoom! SpaBoom has clearly filled
an important niche in the spa industry. We're selling online GC's at
all hours (even when we're closed), and out of town sales have risen
dramatically."

Conference Vendor Spotlight: Nufolia Products
Courtesy of
"What's Hot, Inc.", a wholesale distributor of upscale niche market
products
As Seen at
the International Spa Association (ISPA) Conference, Dallas,
Texas, Sept 30-Oct 3, 2005: More than 300 vendors of the best spa
products, equipment and supplies exhibited at this year's conference.
We enjoyed trying time-honored sellers from long-time exhibitors, and
were excited to meet new vendors and try all-new products to spotlight
for our spa members and readers. Over the coming weeks we'll be sharing
our favorites.
Here, we
spotlight the wonderful NUFOLIA exfoliating mitt and soap products
which are perfectly packaged as an elegant gift.
We were able
to try the beautiful
Nufolia
products -- exfoliating bath and body
mitts and cold-pressed soap -- courtesy of Rima Ariss, the marketing
director of Nufolia, which is based in Canada, and its US wholesale
distributor,
"What's Hot" from New York.
Nufolia's deluxe combo mitt
pack, containing one each of a bath and body mitt, is an award-
winning Canadian design which presents beautifully as a minimalist and
elegant gift. The slim grey cardstock folio opens to reveal one each of
the lush exfoliating mitts. The hypoallergenic Facial Mitt is designed
to cleanse and remove dirt, oily buildup and bacteria without the
abrasive damage found with conventional face cloths. Nufolia's
micro-fiber mitts are based on super-fine fibers from Japan, interwoven
with 35% nylon and 65% polyester yarn that is divided further into 16
fibers through a cutting edge technological process. After three days
in a crowded convention center or outside in the high degree and humid
weather in Dallas, we were eager to use the facial mitt each night in
our hotel. We found it to look and feel lush and elegant in our hands,
and on our face, and the results were wonderful -- the mitt is sized to
fit perfectly over four extended fingers, and cleansed our faces,
particularly the creases of our nose and congested chin areas, to
perfection. With proper care, each mitt is designed to last for 100
washings. The suggested retail price is $8.00 per facial mitt, $10.00
per body mitt, or $25.00 for the combo gift presentation package.
