"We started our lives together 14 years ago with $97.39 in coins to open our first bank account -- and look what we built in that time. . . We have yet to even grasp the extent and impact of our loss. It's a shock. It is more than we can mentally process at this point." -- Keith West-Harrison

Useful for knocking a few bucks off a treatment in whatever metropolis you happen to be in today. Read More

Who should be a given a tip -- and how much? Nearly every deli counter, even some fast food joints, in Seattle displays a jar or cup silently requesting customers to deposit a few coins. Some cups are simply marked "TIPS." Some are cleverly labeled "employee education fund." Then again, "Emily Post's Etiquette," the American standard for good manners, describes many tip jars as nothing but the "inanimate equivalent of an outstretched palm." And there are places such as beauty salons, where customers feel obliged to tip, but aren't sure how to and how much. "Some places have envelopes, some you're supposed to slip it in the person's pocket," said Colleen Stone, chief executive of Seattle-based inSpa, where tipping is not allowed. "You end up feeling awkward or stupid because you don't know the secret handshake." Read More

Bill Targets Nail Salon Outbreaks. Concerned that intense competition among nail salons has prompted some businesses to cut corners on health standards, state officials may require salons to post citations on their windows similar to restaurant letter grades. The rules, contained in a bill that has passed the Assembly and goes before the state Senate Appropriations Committee in the next week, come after three mycobacterial outbreaks at salons in Northern California infected more than 200 people over the last few years. For black women, finding a hair salon can be difficult. Sheri Newbele-Dunn searched almost nine years for a local salon where she could get a satisfying relaxer and set. She finally found one - through word of mouth - four months ago. "I used to fly back to Illinois to do my hair twice a year," she said. "And, sometimes, I would do it myself using box perms." Newbele-Dunn's troubles are typical for black women trying to find a competent hair salon. And, even when they find one, as Newbele-Dunn discovered during her search, it may have so many clients that new customers will have to wait a long time. Read More

Clients call the shots in global spa consultant Terry Liew's therapy programs

Taiwan News

In Singapore, mention the name Terry Liew and people will immediately think "Shiatsu." Liew is the brains behind the city-state's world renowned The Shiatsu School, and the esteemed "healing" guru who has been instrumental in the success of spas in Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Cambodia, and England to name a few.

Rumored to be earning at least US$1,000 a day, this global spa consultant has been commissioned by top- end resorts and cosmetics giants to conceptualized their holistic treatments. In 2002, Hong Kong-based Sanctuary Resorts asked Liew to set up one its Phuket spas. The trial run was so successful that his ties with Sanctuary Resorts turned into a partnership. The hotel management company appointed Liew resident in-house trainer for all its spa projects.

Some of the spas that benefited from Liew's "rejuvenating touch" included Layana Spa in Phuket, Shinta Mani in Cambodia, The Bale in Bali, Aisawan Resort and Spa in Pattaya, Baan Saen Doi in Chiang Mai, Elements Spa in England, and Four Seasons in Langkawi. He even worked with cosmetics companies for their product and service launches including Helena Rubinstein, Chanel, Nuskin, Biotherm, and Virgin Vie Cosmetics.

The spa craze is on, but how can you ensure yours will be a success?

Robyn Taylor Parets for Lodging Magazine

In the 1980s, when the fitness craze was sweeping the nation, upscale hotels met consumer demand by rolling out gyms. Many of these gyms, which started out as unused guestrooms with treadmills and a handful of free weights, have evolved into state-of- the-art fitness centers.

"A spa is now instrumental in a luxury hotel or resort," says Cassandra Sessa, spa director at Spa Conrad at the Conrad Miami hotel. "Years ago, hotels had to have a pool, then tennis courts, then fitness centers. Now they have to have spas."

In fact, many resort operators say revenue goes way up once the property adds a spa or expands its existing spa. "Any four or five-star resort needs to have a spa. You need it to stay competitive, and the spa is a marketing tool to sell rooms and conferences," says Judy Singer, president and co- owner of Health Fitness Dynamics, a spa consulting firm based in Pompano Beach, Fla. In addition, spas help resorts hold onto revenue that may have been lost to outside activities in the past, says Ted Davis, area director of sales and marketing at Wyndham Luxury Resorts. "In the resort business, spas allow you to capture revenue within the organization," he says.

The challenge for resorts, however, is figuring out how to best implement a spa business so that each facility meets the needs of the particular hotel and its guests. "Sometimes hotels build spas that are too big or don't do a good job explaining the spa experience to guests," says Singer.
