Spas Luring More Male Customers. Doctors told Dale Baxter that pills
and steroid injections were the solution for his excruciating headaches
and joint pain. The 45-year-old Air Force retiree was growing leery of
the amount of medication he was taking just to feel normal. So his wife,
Dorothea, suggested he try going to a spa for massage therapy. Three
years later, visiting the spa has become a once a month ritual, and he is
no longer reliant on pain medication.

Making Hungary a Spa and Bath Mecca. The government says it plans to

Hungary Europe's primary spa destination and Budapest one of the official
Cultural Capitals of Europe for 2010.
Regulation Issues hit Medical Spas. The search for the Fountain of
Youth used to be simpler. To feel good, you went to a spa for a facial
and a rubdown. To look good, you went to a dermatologist who prescribed a
miracle cream or a plastic surgeon who took a few nips and tucks. Today
the lines are blurring with the rise of "medical spas" that combine
feel-good fare with more invasive treatments such as laser hair removal
and wrinkle- smoothing Botox injections. Now, the death of Shiri Berg,
22, an N.C. State student, is raising questions about the need for more
scrutiny of what happens in the scented confines of a medical spa --
whether doctors ought to be more involved and how much oversight the
industry needs.

Beauty Therapies a Hit with the Elderly. Botox be damned. For
89-year-old Tui Francis- Preston there's nothing like a facial to peel
away the years. "Oh, it's lovely," she coos as beauty therapist Maria
Dunn lays on the moisturiser. "My skin feel nice and free. It hasn't been
like that for ages." The women have become firm friends since Ms Dunn
began pampering sessions for elderly residents at the Rita Angus
Retirement Village in Kilbirnie, Wellington, several months ago.
Internet access and iPods are the rage in Hawaii as much as on the
mainland. The Grand Wailea Resort Hotel & Spa on Maui now
offers loaner Mini iPods with preloaded music at the Grand Design Salon
in the resort's Spa Grande, to help relax during your pedicure.
Water, Water, Everywhere. Hydrotherapy services are winning over curious
spa clients. They're messy, they're wet and let's face it, some of
them sound a little strange, but hydrotherapy services are winning over
curious spa clients. When people want stress relief, they tend to go for
massage-the manipulation of muscles, the prone sleeping position and the
feel of another's hands all create a comforting environment. But massages
are difficult to book at the last minute, and they tend to knock you out
rather than energize you. So more spas are offering their clients other
methods of relaxation and rejuvenation-methods that involve water.
Creating
a Spa in Your Hotel
Melinda
Minton, The Spa Association, for Hospitality.Net
As a spa
industry consultant I see a great many spas in hotels that just don't
measure up. Read on for 5 big mistakes and a list of easy "do's"
for making your spa facility more complete within your hotel.
Number 1: The
spa is disassociated from the rest of the facility. As if an afterthought
or an unexplained addition to a made over house, many times a hotel will
add a spa. Sometimes it is located away from logical amenities that would
compliment the services offered, like the whirlpool/pool area.
Furthermore, some spas are simply ill placed within the larger structure.
A spa that I visited at a well-known Los Angeles hotel and fitness club
had its massage rooms within the locker room. During my massage I was
treated to women chatting, babies crying and endless lockers slamming.
Not a pleasant experience, to say the least. A spa can be added on to an
existing facility; however, site planning must be carefully analyzed.
Sometimes the expense of moving walls or extending plumbing to make the
facility design functional is not a choice, it is a must. What is that
phrase that our mothers used when we did poorly as children? "Either do
it right or don't do it at all." As a hotel facility looking to add spa
services or a spa area to the existing or new hotel, the commitment to do
the project right the first time must be made for the spa's budget and
space allowances. Anything falling short of that will be a disaster.

Ancient
Technique for Hair Removal Finds a New Audience
"Threading" a
popular search term on SpaWire.Com and SpaIndex.Com
"You're the
only site I've found so far that offers lists of places for threading!!
Can you please help me find a spa or salon that offers threading in
Seattle? I'm really anxious to have my eyebrows threaded, as I can't
tolerate wax, and I find tweezing tedious and painful." -- Carrie R.,
Seattle, WA
"I'm
interested in offering threading services at my salon,
however, I have been unable to find a threader who is willing or
available to teach the technique. It seems rather exclusive. Is this so,
or, do you have any resources for classes? I'd rather learn the art
myself, but I'd also be willing to host a threading artist who could come
to our salon one day a week to thread for our clients." -- T.B.,
Santa Rosa, CA
SpaIndex.Com
and SpaWire.Com received the two letters, above, this week. They are but
two examples of letters we receive on a daily and weekly basis from both
spa consumers and spa professionals, alike.
What is
"Threading?" An ancient method of hair removal with origins in Arabia and
South Asia. It is very delicate procedure, making it suitable for even
the most sensitive skin. The art of threading may be seen in the gentle
and precise twisting of a length of cotton thread which is twisted along
the hairs which are to be removed. The twisting action of the thread
traps the hair and lifts it out of the follicle. Threading is more
effective and less painful than tweezing; hair re-growth becomes finer
and more sparse after regular treatments; and the top layers of skin are
not peeled or traumatized in the process. Threading is highly recommended
and an excellent option for those who use Retin-A, Accutane, and similar
products.
To address the
needs of our spa consumers/readers, SpaIndex.Com, our guide to day spas
and stay spas, Spa Index Media has created a special interest page
of spas and salons offering this unique service. If you offer
threading at your spa and salon, ask to be listed today. To address
the needs of our spa and salon professionals, we have also created a
sign-up sheet for interested in being matched to an artist willing to
teach the craft.
Plans
Shaping Up for Carlsbad 'Sports Resort'
Sign On San
Diego (March 20, 2005)
Western
Athletic Clubs of San Francisco, the operator of a chain of luxurious
health clubs on the West Coast, is planning a $25 million "sports resort"
adjacent to the Olympic Resort Hotel and Spa in Carlsbad.
Western
Athletic Clubs plans to sublease about 8 acres of the parcel from Olympic
Resort Hotel for its sports complex. The hotel is planning to close its
spa, and hotel guests would have privileges to use the private sports
complex adjacent to the hotel, Vallas said. The resort will be similar in
design to its existing Carmel Valley club. The facility will be built on
the site of the Olympic Resort driving range. A municipal golf course and
driving range is being built a mile and a half west of the site. "We'll
have a 100,000-square-foot building with two gymnasiums, a
20,000-square-foot fitness center, eight lighted tennis courts and our
aquatic center," Jones said. The sports complex will also have a spa,
day-care facilities, restaurant, clothing boutique, meeting rooms and
rooms for yoga, Pilates, spinning and other group exercises.
Ohio a
Leader in Regulating Spa Services
Toledo Blade
(March 20, 2005)
Ohio enacted
legislation covering massage therapists in 1916, years ahead of other
states. With the addition of South Dakota just this year, there are 34
states that regulate massage therapists, according to the American
Massage Therapy Association in Evanston, Ill. Michigan is not among them.
Ohio stands
out from other states in regard to who has the regulatory authority. The
State Medical Board of Ohio reports on its Web site that: "Ohio is the
only state in which massage therapy is considered a limited branch of
medicine. The Medical Board licenses massage therapists and regulates
massage therapy schools and practitioners through its standing committee
on the Limited Branches and Alternative Medicine with the assistance of
the Massage Therapy Advisory Committee."
