America, strengthens its marketing team with the addition of three senior
executives: Sharon Mosse, Diane Lavietes and Eva Dowds. The new team will be

April 22, 2005: Bonding Through Beauty, by Ursula Furi- Perry,
ParentsandKids/TownOnline. She says she's too old for the zoo and too cool for
the opera. You can't agree on a place to have dinner and she won't be caught
dead with you at the movies. So just what do you do when you'd like to spend
quality time with your preteen daughter? Many moms are turning to beauty for
bonding, taking their daughters to the beauty salon and spa. Jeri Martin of
Wilmington schedules manicures, pedicures and facials with her thirteen
year-old daughter, Shannon. "It gives me a chance to do something special with
her," Martin says. "We get to spend one-on-one time together." Martin always
makes sure she and Shannon can sit next to each other. "We help each other pick
out colors and have great talks."
April 23, 2005: How Many Cuticle Experts Does One City Need? By
Leanne Delap, GlobeandMail.com. I knew Toronto was a city that loved its
gimmicks (retractable roofs and the world's highest disco -- remember Sparkles?
Terrifying), but really. Seems I'm not alone in my skepticism as a series of
visits this week showed there were no waterholics bellied up to the bar, but
such are the crazy "extras" -- free robes, custom DJ'd "experiences," double
digit designer renos and boxfuls of Botox -- that elite spa owners are piling
on to get attention in a crowded market.
April 25, 2005: Four Las Vegas area spas earn high rankings, by
Jennifer Shubinski, Las Vegas Sun. It may come as no surprise to the pampered:
Four of the country's top spas are located in the Las Vegas Valley. Mobil
Travel Guide last week announced its 2005 America's Best Hotel and Resort Spas,
rating Canyon Ranch Spa Club at the Venetian, Spa Bellagio, The Spa
at Four Seasons, and Spa Vita de Lago at the Ritz Carlton, Lake Las
Vegas with four-star ratings. Only one spa, The Spa Montage at Montage
Resort in Laguna Beach, Calif., received a five-star rating.
April 26, 2005: Free treatments at local and international spas and as much
as US $50,000 in free holiday accommodation packages will go up for grabs at
Arabian Travel Market 2005, the region's premier travel and tourism
exhibition, to be held from May 3 - 6 at Dubai World Trade Centre. It will be
the biggest ATM in the event's 11-year history featuring more new-to- market
exhibitors, special offers and prizes than ever before.
April 27, 2005: French doctor sets sight on medical tourism. The
pursuit of niche markets is a major component of the Department of Tourism's (DoT)
strategy to position the Philippines as Asia's next "Tourism Capital." While
attracting mass market is not seen as a difficulty in reaching its annual
visitor's target, it is felt that equal emphasis should be placed on targeting
high-level niche markets, comprising of quality visitors who stay longer and
spend more. Among some of these key markets include the spa and wellness trade,
long- staying retirees, golfers, international film makers and medical tourism.
April 27, 2005: The New Shape of Spa Cuisine, by Barbara Yost,
Arizona Republic. Spa cuisine: Three peas arranged geometrically on a plate
garnished with a sprig of parsley. Right? Not exactly. Spa cuisine is not just
for models and the undernourished anymore. It can be satisfying food with
enough heft that no one leaves the table hungry. It's not a diet. "For me, it's
healthy eating," says Anton Brunbauer, executive chef at the Westin Kierland
Resort & Spa in Phoenix. "Portion size has to be adequate."
April 27, 2005: Sea Temple Resort & Spa at Palm Cove in tropical
North Queensland has been honoured as the Best New Hotel in Australia, New
Zealand the South Pacific at the 2005 HM - Hotel & Accommodation Excellence -

Spotlight:
Jiggy Jig's Kimonos for the Spa
Jiggy Jig's
collection of Yukata Kimonos and Happi Coats give a modern and
unique approach to the traditional styles that have represented Japanese
culture for thousands of years. Our kimonos are handcrafted in a small village
in Bali, Indonesia. The ancient technique is called Batik (pronounced bateek.)
Batik can be traced back 2,000 years ago to Egypt and the Middle East as well
as India and Asia. It is believed that it was first worn by the aristocrats and
royalty.
The Happi
(pronounced hop-e, pictured at left) is a short kimono with a narrower sleeve.
We have designed them longer than traditional length to fit most. During the
Edo Period, protective jackets worn by fire fighters came to be called Happi.
Later shop keepers, crafts people and other workers adopted them as their
working uniform. Today, they are casually worn throughout Japan. Comfortable
and easy to wear, the Happi is perfect to slip on after a bath or shower, for
lounging around the pool, spending a day at the spa or simply relaxing at home.
