Another example of Palm Springs' renaissance and development is open for business, returning to life a vital part of the desert resort's storied past. The Springs of Palm Springs Hotel & Spa is a boutique resort property featuring 25 artistically designed rooms with courtyard and mountain views. Salon became winner by losing sports focus

With 1,000 baseball, basketball, racquetball and bowling enthusiasts using the Total Sports Center daily, two entrepreneurs thought the Harrison Township site was perfect for a salon and spa they opened inside the building in early 2001. Their reasoning: Bored spectators would jog inside along with people wanting to correct helmet hair and others with strained muscles seeking therapeutic massage. But it didn't work as they hoped. Shangri-La plans spas to add luxury, occupancy

Shangri-La Asia Ltd aims to build on the idyllic image its name conjures by introducing its own spa brand to many of its hotels, a move that should also deliver a more tangible benefit: higher occupancy levels, a senior company executive said. The luxury hotel group, which took its name from the tranquil haven in author James Hilton's 1933 novel Lost Horizon, is to open a number of spas under the newly launched "CHI" brand. Ginger Lee, author of the new book, Spa Style Europe, says that spas today aren't what they used to be.

"The term spa has been diluted to refer to everything from a bath with water jets to an establishment that only offers grooming services," she says. "But, in the English-speaking parts of Europe and other parts of the world, the term is understood to encompass a wider approach to health and wellness, rest and relaxation that aims to treat the body, mind and spirit."
