Enterprising Farmers Find Alternative Use for Produce

Life on the dairy farm for the Cheesmond family has been tough in recent years. The effects of foot-and- mouth disease, and problems with pricing in organic farming, have taken their toll on their County Durham business. They could probably do with some pampering themselves, but instead have decided to try to keep business going by opening a health spa on the farm, and helping others to unwind.

Investigation: Dangerously Dirty Day Spas and Salons in Tampa, Florida

A trip to the hair salon or nail salon is supposed to be a relaxing, stress-free experience. You expect the place to be clean, the equipment to be safe. But some salons are cutting corners and putting your health at risk, as people like Carol Rice have found out. An ABC Action News investigation discovered poor sanitary conditions in dozens of bay area salons. Toque de Classe Salon, on North Florida Avenue in Tampa, is riddled with obvious health code violations.

Yes, says Mathilde Thomas, founder of Caudalie, a French skin-care company that is built around the vitamins and anti- oxidants found in grapes.

Iceland's Spa Culture Hits the Boiling Point

Icelanders have been hot-tubbing longer than any other people on Earth. Wracked with volcanic activity, Iceland is also covered with natural steam vents -- places where hot water just shoots out of the ground. That gift of infinite, free, running hot water has put a heated public swimming pool in every Icelandic town and village. Icelandic yuppies trade gossip in their civic hot tubs before work, and Icelandic moms take the kids swimming every day after school. Iceland's number-one swimming hole, the Blue Lagoon has expanded in the past few years into a full-fledged spa.

Thai Lanna Spa Association Launched

With strong support from the Chiang Mai Health Department, the Thai Lanna Spa Association was officially launched during the World Congress of Holistic Medicine, recently held in Chiang Mai, with the overall aim of raising standards within the northern spa industry. "We introduced our association during the Congress to emphasize the unique link between northern spas and the traditional herbal treatments for which the North is famous," explains the association's President Mrs Chitra Klanprayoon of Ban Sabai Spa. Currently with 20 member spas, the new association will focus on promoting northern art & culture in Chiang Mai spas, utilizing local products, oils and herbs, and supporting the environment. However, its most important task will be to work closely with sister spa associations in Bangkok, Samui and Phuket to help the Public Health Ministry draft standards for the spa industry and devise government-recognized training programs for therapists, spa managers and spas operators.

The Feel Good Factor

The word "ritual" has a beautiful, mysterious ring to it that makes its meaning all the more solemn. Ritual tends mostly to be associated with religion and places of worship, but it has a place in every day life too - there's something to be said for creating a sense of ceremony in even the most secular of things, like lovingly preparing a meal, gardening, or filling your home with lit candles in the evening just because. It's got much to do with elevating every moment in life from the mundane to something more cherished.

Spa owner Elizabeth Brandt of Sérénité Wellness Centres evidently thinks so too, having incorporated the ritualistic element into things that are already renowned for making us feel so good - massages, aromatherapy, facials, body wraps and polishes - at her new Cape Town beachfront property. The name - Sérénité Lifestyle Rituals - says it all. Here, in Mouille Point, a few metres away from the glittering Atlantic, you don't go for a "treatment", which has such a clinical association (treatment implying that there's a problem that needs to be fixed). Rather, a "holistic lifestyle ritual" is chosen specifically with you in mind.
