Spa Providers - Take part in Spa
Day LA and Spa Day SF This Fall
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
SPA DAY LA & SPA DAY SF
is a one-day pamper-yourself fundraising event that benefits Aid For AIDS,
Los Angeles' premier provider of direct financial assistance to individuals
and families living with HIV/AIDS. Spa Day SF in Northern California
benefits Project Open Hand as well as Aid For AIDS.
Where does Spa Day take place? At fine spas & salons throughout the
greater Los Angeles area (including Santa Barbara, Laguna Beach, and Palm
Springs) and San Francisco area (including Carmel, Berkley, and the wine
country), on Wednesday, November 17, 2004.
Spa Day's concept is simple: On November 17th, people all over California
will take to the massage or facial tables at scores of the best spas and
high-end salons. Participating local spas contribute 20 percent of their
day's services and gift certificate revenues to Aid For AIDS and Project
Open Hand and, in return, receive extensive media and promotion coverage.
"We encourage our listed California spa members and readers to
participate in this very worthy cause. We are pleased to share this
information with our entire spa community." -- SpaWire.com and SpaIndex.Com Staff
Historic Grand Hotel Marriott
Resort in Point Clear Alabama Back in Business After Hurricane Ivan
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The 157-year-old AAA Four Diamond Grand Hotel Marriott Resort, Golf
Club and Spa reopened to guests and groups on Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2004
after sustaining minimal damage from Hurricane Ivan. This is two days
earlier than expected due to so many hotel employees pitching in to reopen
the resort.
"The Grand Hotel is in 'Grand' condition and ready to welcome back our
guests," says David Clark, general manager at The Grand. "Our employees
have been working hard to prepare the property for reopening. We cleaned
away debris as early as Friday morning, just one day after the storm hit.
Now, when you drive up to the front entrance, you can't even tell that
Hurricane Ivan was here."

Taiwan's Spa Industry Flourishing
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
From its humble beginnings in
1998, the nation's spa industry now offers world-class spa services and
treatments, and holds a key position in the global supply chain of
spa-related equipment and products, industry veterans said yesterday. Now,
it's looking to develop further through government support and the
integration of its resources -- so Taiwan can become a top spa destination
for foreign tourists.
Natural Evolution
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The first thought upon hearing the phrase "day spa for men" - with
treatments including facials, Botox, collagen, massage, body wraps,
manicures and eyebrow wax-n-tints - might be that the concept would be
perfect for gay men or a version of "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy." You'd
be right in both cases. The metrosexual phenomenon is in full swing, with
straight men increasingly aware of their appearance and gay men still
wanting to look their best. "Men are going to spas now more than ever
before," says Lynne Walker McNees, executive director of the International
Spa Association. "Many men see the benefits of combining the spa experience
with their exercise regimen to create a proactive and balanced wellness
program."
Atlanta joined the handful of cities with men-only facilities when JOQ
Day Spa for Men opened this month on tony Peachtree Street between
Midtown and Buckhead.

Canadian Spa Facilities Earn
Healthy Market Share
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Virtually unheard of a decade ago, Canada's spa industry pumps nearly
three-quarters of a billion dollars into the national economy and is poised
for another record-breaking year, especially in Alberta and B.C., which
have nearly a third of Canada's 1,300-and-growing spas. Spas are so
lucrative, they are seen as good investments regardless of the depth of the
owner's pockets.
Bourne Leisure plans further
moves into spa market
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Holiday park operator Bourne Leisure has said it expects to invest
around £45m in its properties over the coming year - which could well see
the development of spa facilities at some of its sites. The company, which
owns and operates the Haven, British Holidays, Haven Europe, Warner and
Butlins brands, opened a £2.5m spa at its flagship Devon Cliffs site
earlier this year - including a health suite, sauna, steamroom, relaxation
terrace, indoor spa pool and treatment rooms - and is waiting to see how
successful it is before developing spa facilities at further sites, but
director, Robert Seaton, has said it is a strong possibility they will. "We
probably will go into the spa market, as long as the customers want it,"
Seaton told Leisure Management. "In the end, people are coming to us for a
rest and we feel spas provide an opportunity to extend our facilities."

educating clients and encouraging them to be empowered to take part in
their own wellness. Building client/therapist relationships at our spa is a

| Forget Gym. It's now "Spa."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When Jack O'Kelley was planning his firm's Florida work retreat, he
knew what he wanted: "a large, lovely spa." (Well, who wouldn't?) As a
scout for Katzenbach Partners' annual off-site, he sought out all the
crucial business amenities: conference rooms, work space and the obvious
high-tech fixings. That was the easy part. The Loews Miami was expanding
its spa, but wouldn't let O'Kelley see it in advance. The spa at Miami's
South Beach Ritz-Carlton was going to be closed for renovations. Then he
found the Ritz-Carlton in Key Biscayne. Not only was the spa open-which
seemed like an accomplishment at that point-it had stunning views, the
service was excellent and it offered treatments ranging from champagne
facials to "mango raw-sugar body scrubs." Hello, Ritz. The 110
Katzenbach employees and significant others had a blast. "We're inclined
to go back," says O'Kelley.
The word "spa" usually evokes lavish pampering of well-to-do
globe-trotters. But resort destinations and downtown hotels alike are
building up their spa facilities to cater to a different class of
guest-the business traveler. "You don't hear the word 'gym' knocked
around much," says Jeff Weinstein, editor in chief of the industry
magazine Hotels. "You hear 'spa.' If you don't have a spa and you're
considered an upper-market hotel, you're not in the game."
