Healthy Destinations
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Spa: A resort with mineral springs, a fashionable resort or hotel or a commercial establishment for facilities for exercising and bathing. That's what Webster's trusty collegiate dictionary offers. But today's spas, while honoring the ancient meaning of the tiny word, have become huge contemporary enterprises. Leading the pathway to healthier vacations, many hotels now tout themselves as "spa destinations," urging guests to tailor their visits around the amenities and services of the spas.
Product Diversion and Slow Economy Impede Growth of Salon Hair Care Products
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Affected by a recessionary economy and increasing diversion of brands, the U.S. market for salon hair care products has demonstrated minimal growth in the last few years. As a result, manufacturers must refresh their product lines with new, trendy offerings in order to gain market share, according to a recently published study by Kline & Company.

SALON HAIR CARE USA 2003, the seventh edition of Kline's study on the professional hair care products industry, examines category size and growth for the U.S. market, market share of the leading companies and brands, and sales by segment for in-salon use and salon retail purchases, with forecasts to 2008.

Orlando, Fla., time-share spa resort to market to gays
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Orlando's first gay time-share resort, The Gardens, will be built this fall on Rock Lake near the Parliament House, a longtime gay-oriented motel and nightclub on Orange Blossom Trail near downtown. The 164-room resort will be owned by an affiliate of the Parliament Partnership, which operates the Parliament House. It will feature outdoor water sports, sailing, kayaking, retail shops, a business center conference room, health and fitness center, spas and steam rooms, swimming pools and cabanas, Don Granatstein, owner of Parliament House, said Thursday. The multimillion-dollar project is another milestone in the growth of Orlando's large homosexual community, boosted through the decades by the large numbers of gays who work in the major theme parks such as Walt Disney World, potentially the nation's largest single-site employer of gays.
Helping the tourism industry along
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Singapore plans to relax archaic regulations governing spas in a bid to boost growth in the increasingly tourism-related industry, according to press reports. Under rules dating back to 1959, when Singapore was still a British colony, women cannot get a massage from men, but men can be kneaded by either sex. Current regulations also ban couples from having massages together, although some establishments already allow this. "Archaic regulations need to be updated periodically so they can remain relevant to the current times," Eric Low, chief executive of a country club and a member of a panel that reviewed the rules, told the Today newspaper.

More indulging in pamper parties
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A trip to renew the body, mind and spirit doesn't necessarily mean hopping in a car or airplane to a far- flung, and often expensive, spa retreat. From Manhattan to Miami, full-service mobile spas have begun wheeling to the homes of too-busy clients who don't want to let hectic lifestyles get in the way of their fluffing, puffing and polishing. "Sex and the City" actress Kim Cattrall, the Dixie Chicks and Justin Timberlake have all thrown on-site pamper parties, according to In Style magazine.
A Spa of Her Own
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

For seven years, Yamit Wood worked at The New York Times as a beauty editor. Her job required her to travel the world's spas and critique them. While an enviable task, her real dream was to open a spa of her own. With her husband Julian, she fulfilled that fantasy in December 2003. Though she worked and lived in the US for much of her life, and though Julian is British and has ties in Africa and the UK, they chose Tel Aviv as the location in which to open shop.

The Most Expensive Hotels in the United States
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It helps to be one of the U.S.'s richest people to afford a stay at one of the most expensive hotels in the country, which range from the $5,000-per-night Mansion at MGM Grand in Las Vegas to the $600-a- night Inn at Palmetto Bluff in South Carolina. As the adage says, you get what you pay for, and this certainly rings true with hotels. When booking a room, it's safe to say that any hotel in the $300-a- night price range will be quite good, or even great, depending on the location. So what exactly do you get for double, triple or, in some cases, more than ten times that price? It comes down to privacy, space and service.
  • Mansion at MGM Grand, Las Vegas, Nevada
  • The Point, Saranac Lake, New York
  • Little Palm Island, Little Torch Key, Florida
  • Twin Farms, Barnard, Vermont
  • Golden Door Resort & Spa, Escondido, California
  • Cal-a-Vie, Vista, California
  • Amangani, Jackson Hole, Wyoming
  • Ritz-Carlton Central Park South, New York, New York
  • Casa Palmero, Pebble Beach, California
  • Inn at Palmetto Bluff, Blufton, South Carolina
The 157-year-old AAA Four Diamond Grand Hotel Marriott Resort, Golf Club and Spa reopened to guests and groups on Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2004 after sustaining minimal damage from Hurricane Ivan. This is two days earlier than expected due to so many hotel employees pitching in to reopen the resort.
"Our employees have been working hard to prepare the property for reopening. We cleaned away debris as early as Friday morning, just one day after the storm hit. Now, it's looking to develop further through government support and the integration of its resources -- so Taiwan can become a top spa destination for foreign tourists.
Natural Evolution
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The first thought upon hearing the phrase "day spa for men" - with treatments including facials, Botox, collagen, massage, body wraps, manicures and eyebrow wax-n-tints - might be that the concept would be perfect for gay men or a version of "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy." You'd be right in both cases. The metrosexual phenomenon is in full swing, with straight men increasingly aware of their appearance and gay men still wanting to look their best. "Men are going to spas now more than ever before," says Lynne Walker McNees, executive director of the International Spa Association. "Many men see the benefits of combining the spa experience with their exercise regimen to create a proactive and balanced wellness program."

Atlanta joined the handful of cities with men-only facilities when JOQ Day Spa for Men opened this month on tony Peachtree Street between Midtown and Buckhead.

Bourne Leisure plans further moves into spa market

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Holiday park operator Bourne Leisure has said it expects to invest around £45m in its properties over the coming year - which could well see the development of spa facilities at some of its sites. The company, which owns and operates the Haven, British Holidays, Haven Europe, Warner and Butlins brands, opened a £2.5m spa at its flagship Devon Cliffs site earlier this year - including a health suite, sauna, steamroom, relaxation terrace, indoor spa pool and treatment rooms - and is waiting to see how successful it is before developing spa facilities at further sites, but director, Robert Seaton, has said it is a strong possibility they will. "We probably will go into the spa market, as long as the customers want it," Seaton told Leisure Management. "In the end, people are coming to us for a rest and we feel spas provide an opportunity to extend our facilities."
Forget Gym. It's now "Spa."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

When Jack O'Kelley was planning his firm's Florida work retreat, he knew what he wanted: "a large, lovely spa." (Well, who wouldn't?) As a scout for Katzenbach Partners' annual off-site, he sought out all the crucial business amenities: conference rooms, work space and the obvious high-tech fixings. That was the easy part. The Loews Miami was expanding its spa, but wouldn't let O'Kelley see it in advance. The spa at Miami's South Beach Ritz-Carlton was going to be closed for renovations. Then he found the Ritz-Carlton in Key Biscayne. Not only was the spa open-which seemed like an accomplishment at that point-it had stunning views, the service was excellent and it offered treatments ranging from champagne facials to "mango raw-sugar body scrubs." Hello, Ritz. The 110 Katzenbach employees and significant others had a blast. "We're inclined to go back," says O'Kelley.

The word "spa" usually evokes lavish pampering of well-to-do globe-trotters. But resort destinations and downtown hotels alike are building up their spa facilities to cater to a different class of guest-the business traveler. "You don't hear the word 'gym' knocked around much," says Jeff Weinstein, editor in chief of the industry magazine Hotels. "You hear 'spa.' If you don't have a spa and you're considered an upper-market hotel, you're not in the game."
