Care & Charity: Spas Help Those That Are Stressed

According to the International Spa Association, the number of spas in Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana,
Mississippi, Oklahoma and Texas region jumped from 669 to 969 from 1999 to 2001. On average, spas in
the region have 4,100 visits per year. Its study also reported that spas are becoming a main
component in the development of resorts and shopping malls. Alexander von Illyes, president of
European Skincare Institute, said the boost in spa business is a result of the attacks of Sept. 11,
2001. "People are recognizing something terrible could happen and now they want to do something for
themselves," von Illyes said. "And, travel is riskier so day spas have become like a vacation in
their backyard."

December 3, 2003 (DENVER) - The Denver Zoo's four orangutans smell pretty good these days -- they're
getting daily aromatherapy treatments. That means the 20-year-old ape Mias gets chamomile on his
right ear, basil and angelica on his nose, and fennel, eucalyptus and frankincense on his forehead.
