News for the Week of December 27, 2004 SpaWire(tm) is a complimentary news digest brought to you by SpaIndex.Com: Guide to Day Spas and Stay Spas, and our sponsors. All of us at Spa Index Media, LLC, are deeply moved and saddened by the overwhelming loss of life and suffering resulting from Sunday's earthquake and tsunami in the Indian Ocean. As the situation progresses and the need for humanitarian services and aid increases, many of us are asking how we may contribute to those relief efforts. Spa Index Media, LLC (SpaIndex.Com, SpaWire.Com, and Spa Flyer), will be making a contribution to the International Relief Fund for the American Red Cross, and, will be directly assisting our spa and resort members in the affected regions. While the immediate and pressing need is for disaster relief (aid, services, money), as part of the global spa community, we recognize that in the coming year and beyond, our spa members and their employees in these regions will suffer staggering economic losses, as well. We stand ready to assist in every way we are able, both with short term aid and in long term support. We are also investigating other ways to help NOW, as more information becomes available. We encourage those interested in donating funds or services to investigate the following links. For those that are interested in hearing how area spa resorts are faring, the Banyan Tree Group has a helpful media hub with updates on the status of the spa properties in the affected regions. Our prayers and sincerest wishes for the swiftest assistance possible go out to all of those impacted by this terrible event.
http://media.banyantree.com "We worked eight months on this, and it is all gone in five minutes" FT.Com (12-29-04) Until Sunday, Khao Lak, a sandy beach fringed with lush green hills, was a popular upmarket Thai tourist destination, a classy alternative to the more frenetic beaches at the older resort island of Phuket. The sweeping coast was lined with stylish, high-end resorts, including the Le Meridian Khao Lak and the Sofitel Magic Lagoon Resort and Spa, both of which opened in the past 18 months. But yesterday, the Sofitel Magic Lagoon, and much of the rest of Khao Lak, was one vast, grim mortuary, as Thai soldiers and Buddhist community volunteers worked to recover more than 700 bodies of mainly foreign tourists who had died when the tsunami struck.
