Cosmetologists work in a variety of settings, including hair and nail salons, barbershops, day spas, health care facilities, health clubs, resorts, and in collaboration with dermatologists and plastic surgeons.  They may earn certification in one or more of four separate fields of practice as defined in Oregon Revised Statutes (ORS) 690.005:
Hair Design - Practitioners specialize in cutting or trimming hair, applying chemical treatments (coloring, dyeing, permanent waving), as well as relaxing, shampooing, cleansing/conditioning, temporary curling and styling of hair.   Barbering - A separate discipline from Hair Design, Barbering includes the practice of shaving, trimming, or cutting of the beard, and the arranging, cutting, styling, dressing, shampooing, cleansing/conditioning or temporary curling of hair. Facial Technology - Facial Technicians use their hands or mechanical and electric tools to apply cosmetic preparations, antiseptics, tonics, lotions or creams to the human face and neck (above the seventh vertebra). Facial services are performed for cosmetic purposes to exercise or manipulate facial and neck muscles and/or exfoliate dead skins cells.  Nail Technology - Nail Technicians cut, trim, clean, massage, polish, color or tint the natural nails on hands and feet. Practitioners also apply, sculpt and remove artificial nails.  Education and Training -  Applicants for licensure in Oregon must first complete and pass courses required by the Oregon Department of Education (DOE)
